The
Community Idea Stations are a family of public broadcasting stations
(PBS and NPR) owned by Commonwealth
Public Broadcasting Corporation that work together to strengthen
communities, empower families and inform citizens throughout
central Virginia.
The
Community Idea Stations
support teachers by
training them on how to integrate technology into their curriculums,
bringing energy and excitement into the classroom and giving students
the capabilities they need to succeed.
empower
parents to take an active role in their childrens
education by using hands-on workshops to teach parents and
child care providers how to combine viewing of PBS childrens
programs with related learning activities and reading, to promote
emergent literacy skills and equip children with a greater vocabulary,
preparing them for success in school.
present
news and information in objective, responsible fashion, giving
viewers (on programs like Newshour
with Jim Lehrer and Frontline) and listeners
(on programs like Morning Edition and All Things Considered)
a chance to thoughtfully and fairly develop perspectives and conclusions
about our community, our country, and our world.
raise
awareness about the difficulties and challenges that people in our
community are facing by connecting those in need with
those who can help through locally-produced
programs like Perspective,
Virginia Currents and local
follow up programs to national PBS issues-based programs.
give
people the chance to experience places, arts, and cultures that
they may never see or hear otherwise, through programs such
as Performance Today, Fresh Air with Terry Gross,
Globe Trekker and Great Performances enriching
lives and affording the opportunity for listeners
and viewers to experience a much larger
world.
provide
a forum to showcase the local arts and local artists in our community,
such as the American Youth Harp Ensemble, the Latin Ballet
of Virginia, Terri Allard, Bio Ritmo and Susan
Greenbaum on locally-produced programs such as The Community
Idea Stations Present and The
Music Seen encouraging those who are showcased and inspiring
those who dream of being showcased.
