Governor McDonnell Signs Budget Bill; Includes Line Item Veto that Affects a Portion of PBS Funding

From Curtis Monk, President and CEO of the Community Idea Stations: “While we’re disappointed any time there is a reduction in State Funding, particularly one that directly impacts our educational mission, we remain committed to providing the very best programs and services for the communities that we serve. This clearly reinforces the importance of the support that we receive from our viewers and listeners.”

Excerpt from Governor McDonnell’s Veto Letter: “I am confident that the excellent work done by public television and radio will continue with generous contributions from the private sector.”

The governor has chosen to use PBS facilities without paying for them. Will he be a private sector contributor instead? Come to think of it, his salary is paid by my taxes. Not much private sector there! Does he pay for cable at the residence or is that bill paid by the state as well?

The state does have fiscal problems, but so do many of the residents of the state - except the governor. I haven't noted his making sacrifices in terms of salary, living expenses, office expense, travel costs, etc., while he continues using PBS facilities to denigrate PBS. If the viewer who complained about his cable service doesn't like the transmission provided by his cable company, perhaps he should change cable companies. PBS transmission is loud and clear over the air.

PBS programs are not available anywhere else nor are PBS facilities. Governor, It would be incredibly shortsighted to defund PBS.

Since WHTJ has been broadcasting on cable with the wrong aspect ratio, I stongly support defunding PBS

In light of Governor McDonnell's midnight line item veto of the Virginia Legislature's authorized funding for public broadcasting in the state, here's what should happen:

An immediate termination of all contract agreements the state now has with Central Virginia's Public Broadcasting which allow the Governor his creepy little side-kick to strut around on FOX News bad-mouthing the very people who make his appearances possible.

That's right, whenever you see "McDonnell & Cooch" on TV they are always using Richmond's public TV studios to do so.

And at a bargain rate!

Also, whenever you see live streaming of the Virginia Legislature Senate and House sessions on the internet? That's your local public broadcasting production crew making that all happen.

All this at a lower-than-market-value rate in view of the state's (now no longer existent) support.

So, guess what? No more sweetheart deals for the Commonwealth of Virginia there, future hair-piece.

From now on, the Governor should pay *full price* if he's going to use our facilities to urinate on us in public in order to make his little tea party buddies titter.

So, pay up, bubba.

After all, this is a free market economy we're running here in Virginia. Right?

The state's broke. Right?

And we *all* have to make some hard choices.

Right?

Like making FOX News pick up the damn bill for a change.

Or... we could negotiate a new contract with the state. And the new price? How about we say, oh, maybe 400,000?

Right!
