Is Radio Sound Salvation?

Forro in the Dark

The great Elvis Costello (one of my hero's) once sang that "radio is a sound salvation." Well on this week's World Music Show (5/25), the sounds you'll hear may not bring you salvation but they'll certainly be able to entertain you.

A Simple Thing

Latin Playboys

On one level, music is a simple thing, right? We know what we like and often times we may not even pay attention to what's being played. Many times music is even background noise, simply sounds to absorb throughout the day.

James Gates Releases New CD

James Gates

Saxophonist James Gates has just released a new cd called “Gates Wide Open.” Gates is a native Richmonder who has played with many jazz greats, including Walter Bishop, Jr. and Art Blakey. He currently runs the jazz program at Virginia State University but hasn’t let his performing career slide.

He’s playing a CD release party tonight (5/14) at Capitol Ale House, part of the Richmond Jazz Society’s Guest Educator Concert series.

A Mother of a Show

Harry Belafonte

There are things we do for those we love, even though we may not want to. For me, it's taking a trip to a craft store with my wife. I'll go because I know she likes to go there. But if I can avoid it, I will. Then there are the things we do for those we love becuase we know that it'll bring them great joy. That's the premise for this week's World Music Show (5/11).

Cut to the Chase

Arthur H.

Listen. I've got to make this quick. You see, sometimes, there are so many things pulling at me, from all sorts of directions, that once in awhile, it's hard to find the time to share the beauty of sound that awaits you on Saturday night. I'm sure that's true for many of us. So the blog for this week's World Music Show (5/4) is going to cut to the chase. That's right, no fluffy filler information--just the main bits that will hopefully sway you to tune into this week's show.

Knockin' Around These Blues CD cover

Our friend Bob Corritore is at it again! This superb harp player, radio host and all-around purveyor of the blues has teamed up with another of our favorites, guitarist John Primer for a rollickin' new CD "Knockin' Around These Blues" and you can hear tracks from it on Time for the Blues this week (4/28/13)!

Itchy Feet

Anoushka Shankar

It's getting to be that time of year. You know, the weather is finally being somewhat consistent, it's staying lighter longer and I can see the road signs up ahead of a future vacation. It's with that eye on the horizon that I decided to make this week's World Music Show (4/27) a mini-trip to various island nations (with other "beachy" locales thrown in). You could say that I'm getting Itchy Feet about wanting to travel.

World Blues & Other Grooves

Vieux Farka Toure

Not to ride on the capes of the ever-popular WCVE Public Radio show Time for the Blues, hosted by John Porter and Henry Cook, but every once in awhile I like to feature a bevy of "World Blues" music on this show. So, as a nod to those two fine fellows, on this week's World Music Show (4/20), you'll get to hear a few chunks of this style of music--but done with a world-music twist.

Elvis Unleaded?
