Bill McLaughlin and Richmond’s All Saints Choir of Men and Boys on December 21st

I don’t know about you but I get very nostalgic around the holidays. One of my favorite things to do is to turn off the TV and turn on the Christmas tree lights and radio and experience the holiday as they once did in simpler times. On Wednesday, December 21st WCVE Public Radio offers two programs that will fit the bill perfectly for this kind of yesteryear activity.

Surpreme Being of Blogness

Supreme Beings of Leisure

First things first. Let me explain the title of this week's blog and in-so-much, the theme of this week's World Music Show (12/10). The title refers to a group called The Supreme Beings of Leisure. They play this wordly, loungy sort of music whose grooves just feel good when the volume is turned up. But more about this style of music in a bit. Let's run down the list of what to expect in the minutes leading up to the chunk of Lounge music.

"Great Performances: Andrea Bocelli Live in Central Park"

Accompanied by the New York Philharmonic, under the direction of music director Alan Gilbert, the spectacular event was Bocelli’s special gift to New York City. The program is the New York-based offering of the multi-city PBS Arts Fall Festival, which includes four Great Performances productions. Award-winning journalist Paula Zahn is the evening’s host.

"Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Featuring David Archuleta and Michael York"

David Archuleta

Award-winning pop sensation David Archuleta and acclaimed actor Michael York join the renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir in an energetic Christmas celebration of magnificent proportion.

Recorded live in the spectacular 21,000-seat Conference Center in Salt Lake City, this remarkable event combines elegant dancing, masterful musical performances and storytelling. Complete with Yuletide favorites such as “Silent Night” and “Joy to the World,” the memorable performance also includes unique music such as “Los pastores a belén,” sung by David Archuleta completely in Spanish, Michael York’s touching tale about the humble beginnings of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, together with moving organ, choir and orchestra performances.

'My Fair Lady' still a classic

One of the all-time classics hits the Empire Theatre. Critic John Porter takes a look.
