Think Globally, Hear Locally

Bio Ritmo

I ask you, what kind of World Music Show host would I be if I didn't, at least once in awhile, play some tracks from some of our very own, homegrown Richmond World Music Bands? Not a very good one. That's why, on this week's World Music Show (2/2), I'll be highlighting a few songs from some of RVA's most popular World Beat Bands.

“Richard II” on Shakespeare Uncovered

Shakespeare Uncovered

The stories behind Shakespeare’s greatest plays are shared by modern Shakespearean actors and directors in the series Shakespeare Uncovered. Next up, Derek Jacobi will examine “Richard II,” including scenes from a new, upcoming PBS film of the play featuring Ben Whishaw and Patrick Stewart.

Not So Bizzaro World Music

Bob Dylan

My apologies to those who don't get the reference to Superman. To explain, Bizzaro World is alternate world in which things are the exact opposite as they are on regular earth. So, on that world, Superman does things backwards. How does this relate to this week's World Music Show (1/26)? Well, if you see this week's cover photo of Bob Dylan, you may be thinking "What's Bob Dylan doing on The World Music Show?" Hence, my reference to Bizzaro World.

Ode to the Marleys (and Other Sounds)

Bob Marley

Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Gather Round! Gather Round! On this week's World Music Show (1/19), we'll dedicate hour one to exploring and honoring (at least a little bit) all the musical treats the family Marley has given us. From the revered senior Marley, down to a few of his sons (if we had more time and more CDs of the entire family, then we could dedicate a two-hour show to this immense outpouring of music). However, this won't be a "greatest hits" collection culled from simply one or two CDs. No Sir or Ma'am.

Special Beat Service

Pizzicato Five

On this week's World Music Show (1/12), the two-hour time allotment that is given this foray into tunes of the world will encompass a service of special beats that are designed to skip across various styles in said genre. And all that gobbledegook back there basically means is that during this week's show, you'll hear a little bit of this, and a little bit of that, world musically speaking that is.

In Your Ear Episode 14: Harris Brothers; Dry Branch Fire Squad; Joe Felisko and Eric Noden

Ron Thomason and his Dry Branch Fire Squad

We’ll hear from North Carolina’s Harris Brothers with guest fiddler Nate Leath, beloved storyteller and bluegrass bandleader Ron Thomason and his Dry Branch Fire Squad and two traveling bluesmen from the Windy City, Joe Felisko and Eric Noden. Three short sets of great American music recorded before a live Richmond audience, fill up the next hour of In Your Ear.

Numero Uno for 2013

We Are Enfant Terrible

Well, we have to start somewhere, so we might as well start here. I mean, it is show number one--the first show of Season number six of the World Music Show. And though this week's headline isn't perhaps as creative as headlines of blogs past, it does get right to the point. Speaking of which, let's do that now. On this week's World Music Show (1/5), we'll pack as much sound--both mellow and frenetic--as we can in the space of two hours.

Top Picks & Musical Tricks

Cornershop

Wow! I can't believe that this year is at an end. Together, we've logged 52 World Music Shows! Fifty two people! These facts deserve exclamation points, right? And in that time, I've come across some pretty cool music--some new, and some "new to me." So, on this week's World Music Show (12/29), I'll rewind the tape a bit and playback some of my favorite tunes from the past year.

Blues for the New Year!

Etta James

Join us this week (12/30/12) as Time for the Blues rings in the New Year early! We'll have some cool New Year's blues tracks (and they aren't easy to find!) and Henry might wax nostalgic about past New Year's Eves! Believe me, I'll do my best to stop him! We'll also have an announcement for special shows in January!
