Sesame Street

For more than four decades, children and caregivers have counted on Sesame Street for their ABCs, 123s, and other academic skills, such as vocabulary, math, and science. American children who frequently view Sesame Street as pre-schoolers achieve high school grade point averages that are almost 16% higher than those who don’t grow up watching the show. Not only are average grades better, but grades are also better in each of the core areas of English, math, and science.

Community Idea Stations Reduces Workforce due to State Funding Pressures

The Community Idea Stations today announced plans to reduce their workforce by 18% before the end of June.  This action is necessary due to the elimination of funding specific to public broadcasting from the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Budget.  The Community Idea Stations’ share of State funding amounted to just over $700,000 this fiscal year.  Beginning July 1 there are no funds for either Community Service Grants or Education Services Contracts.

D.W. Goes Mobile to Help Children Make Good Food Choices

The first app from the PBS KIDS GO! series Arthur – D.W.’s Unicorn Adventure for iPhone and iPod touch, is available now on the App Store. D.W.’s Unicorn Adventure encourages nutritious snacking for kids ages 4-6, and Arthur fans of all ages. In the app, players have the opportunity to help Arthur’s little sister D.W. save a lost unicorn using the power of healthy foods.

The Muppets Get Their Own Star in Hollywood

The Muppets – the fuzzy, wonderful monsters generations of children have grown up with as part of Sesame Street – have received their own star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. It is the 2,466th star awarded and is on the sidewalk in front of the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles.

Several Muppets were on hand for the ceremony including Kermit the frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal, Pepe, Sweetums and the newest Muppet, Walter.

March 20 would have been Fred McFeely Rogers’ 84th birthday.  His death in 2001 did not stop his impact that is still felt today in the hearts and minds of children, families, and professionals who continue to be nurtured and inspired by his timeless wisdom.
