PBS KIDS Video App Is Now Available on iPhone & iPod touch

The PBS KIDS Video App is now available on iPhone and iPod touch, bringing more free educational video content to families than any other children’s media app, and offering scheduling information for the Community Idea Stations’ children’s programming.  The app gives families free, streaming access to more than 2,000 videos – including clips and full episodes –allowing fans to watch their favorite shows and discover new ones while they are on the go. The PBS KIDS Video App launched on iPad in May with great success; it has served more than 430 million video streams and has had over 450,000 downloads to date.

President Visits High School Robotics Team

President Obama visits high school

(Skipwith, Va.) – Under normal circumstances, a presidential visit to a rural, Southside Virginia high school would be an enormously improbable event.

But thanks to President Barack Obama’s bus tour through North Carolina and Virginia and his commitment to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, members of the FIRST Robotics Competition team at Bluestone High School in Mecklenburg County experienced a once-in-a-lifetime encounter on October 18, 2011.

“Headset Jazz” Host Honored By WCVE Public Radio

Ty Bailey, longtime host of “Headset Jazz,” a popular local program that once aired on WCVE Public Radio, was presented with a plaque that commemorates his many years of service.  Bill Miller, Vice President and General Manager of WCVE Public Radio, presented it to Mr. Bailey on October 19. Mr. Miller states: "We are proud to have been able to bring his talent and unique jazz presentation to this market."

Prohibition is a three-part, five-and-a-half-hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick that tells the story of the rise, rule, and fall of the Eighteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the entire era it encompassed.

The culmination of nearly a century of activism, Prohibition was intended to improve, even to ennoble, the lives of all Americans, to protect individuals, families, and society at large from the devastating effects of alcohol abuse.

Kelly Wilkinson always felt like her crafty side was at odds with her job as a journalist, but now she has a book that incorporates both. Weekend Handmade provides instructions for quirky crafts that virtually anyone can do.

All these crafts have a quirky feel — think hipster Martha Stewart — and they’re pretty simple, too.

Wilkinson works at KQED, the NPR affiliate in San Francisco, and tells Weekend Edition Saturday host Scott Simon crafting was part of her childhood.
