Kathleen Sullivan

The dean of Stanford University Law School, Kathleen Sullivan is a renowned constitutional scholar, law professor and litigator. A graduate of Harvard Law School, she remains that institutions’ youngest person to be named a full professor with tenure, an accomplishment she achieved in 1989 at age 33. Three years later, she was mentioned in national legal publications as a potential future Supreme Court nominee.

Prior to joining the Harvard faculty, Sullivan practiced constitutional and criminal law for two years. She has argued numerous cases in the federal and state courts, and two in the Supreme Court. Sullivan is the co-author of First Amendment Law (Foundation Press, 1999), and New Federalist Papers: Essays in Defense of the Constitution (W.W. Norton & Company, 1997). She is also co-author of the most recent edition of Constitutional Law (Foundation Press, 2000), the leading casebook in its field.

Recognized as an expert, Sullivan has been a commentator on legal and judicial matters for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Nightline and This Week. Sullivan has also appeared on PBS programs including THE NEWSHOUR WITH JIM LEHRER and the Fred Friendly seminars. She is a fellow of the Academy of Arts and Sciences.
