Dan Balz

Dan Balz, who has been called one of the nation’s "most consistently insightful political reporters," covers national news for The Washington Post and has been involved in covering presidential and congressional elections both as a reporter and as an editor since joining the newspaper in 1978. He is one of approximately 15 Washington Post reporters who investigated the Florida recount of the 2000 presidential election.

In 1985, Balz was named national editor of The Washington Post. During the final term of Ronald Reagan’s presidency, he helped to direct the newspaper’s coverage of the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court and the entire federal government. In 1989, he returned to reporting on politics, and one year later, became one of the newspaper’s two White House reporters. At the end of the Gulf War, Balz left the White House beat to report on politics full time and continues in that role today.

Balz has been a frequent guest on PBS’s NEWSHOUR WITH JIM LEHRER and WASHINGTON WEEK as well as CBS’s Face the Nation.
