Jon
Meacham was named managing editor of Newsweek magazine in November
1998. In 2003, he directed coverage of the war in Iraq and, in 2002,
of the conflict in Afghanistan. In 2001, Meacham edited the magazines
coverage of the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, and
oversaw both domestic and international reporting. He was instrumental
in putting a special edition out on newsstands two days after the
attacks and a commemorative issue two weeks later. Newsweeks
coverage of the attacks in three regular issues was honored with a
prestigious National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 2002.
Previously
he served as national affairs editor, supervising coverage of politics
and national news events. In 1998, he edited Newsweeks groundbreaking
coverage of the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal and the impeachment of the
president, which was honored with a 1999 National Magazine Award for
Reporting.
His
most recent book is Franklin and Winston: An Intimate Portrait
of an Epic Friendship about the wartime relationship between Roosevelt
and Churchill.
