The Doctors of Jazz at O’Bank’s Sunday May 6

I was having breakfast the other day at O’Bank’s Cafe and Grill when the friendly waiter/bartender asked, “Do you like jazz?” That sounded like a trick question*, so I hesitated by saying “Umm…,” when he followed up with, “Let me rephrase that. Do you like New Orleans jazz?” I answered with a resounding “Yes!” The reason he asked is because traditional New Orleans jazz band The Doctors of Jazz will be performing a jazz brunch at O’Bank’s this Sunday, May 6 from noon ‘til 2:00 p.m.
The Doctors of Jazz are a local band that is literally comprised of doctors: active and emeritus professors from the University of Richmond, Virginia Union Seminary and Virginia Commonwealth University. Their sound is reminiscent of early hot jazz a la King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Yerba Buena Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five and Johnny Dodds. This should be a lot of fun! O’Bank’s has excellent food and a well-chosen beer selection including Guinness on draft. It’s a great place to hang out on a Sunday, or any day, especially when there’s good music to be heard! Ya’ gotta’ love a place with two apostrophes in its name.

*My stock answer to “Do you like jazz” would have to be “That depends.” I love both Preservation Hall and Medeski, Martin and Wood, but there’s a big difference between that and a lot of what gets called jazz, especially the smooth stuff.
