Virginian Elizabeth LaPrelle on NPR’s Weekend Edition

Ballad singer and old-time musician Elizabeth LaPrelle is a shining star in a movement some are calling The New Young Fogies – twenty-somethings who play old Southern Appalachian music in its pre-bluegrass form, the way it sounded deep in the hills and hollers before radio and commercial recordings came about.
Elizabeth hails from Southwest Virginia and is a graduate of William and Mary where she crafted her own major in Southern Appalachian Traditional Performance. She was featured this past Sunday on NPR’s Weekend Edition in a piece by Noah Adams. Listen to it here.
Elizabeth’s newest project is a duo with Anna Roberts-Gevalt. Anna and Elizabeth weave traditional Appalachian music with storytelling, original artwork, shadow puppetry and scrolling illustrations called Crankies. Not sure what a Crankie is? Check out this video!
