Partisan Divide on Reaction to State of Union

Most of President Obama’s ideas were met with criticisms from Richmond area Republicans. Democrats applauded his State of the Union Speech for its focus on the economy. Sara Sciammacco reports from WCVE's Capitol Hill Bureau in Washington.

Congressman Bobby Scott said he liked all the talk about jobs. Virginia faces a nearly seven percent unemployment rate.

SCOTT :   Most effective and timely way is infrastructure.  If we could do school construction, roads and other kinds of projects like that, people who are now out of work can get back to work.

Republican Randy Forbes criticized the Democrats’ approach to an economic recovery, saying it relies too much on the federal government.

FORBES: I think we give them predictability in the workplace and we’re not changing regulations on them every time you turn around.  We do that by keeping our spending in federal government lower so that we have the cash out there for private sector to grow and grow the jobs.

Forbes also is against a proposal to freeze some government spending, many Republicans won’t do enough to cut the deficit.
