Improvement in Heart Attack Rates

The Virginia Dept of Health compared heart attack rates in 2008 with those in 1998 and found sizeable improvement in the numbers of heart attacks and survivors.

State Health Commissioner Dr. Karen Remley and Dr. Charles Frazier, President of Virginia Health Information, were with Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling yesterday when he made the announcement.

Bolling: The number of heart attacks in Virginia have actually declined by 18 percent, and even more striking, the number of deaths related to heart attacks have declined by 44%.

That means, Bolling added, more than 1300 fewer Virginians died from a heart attack in that ten-year period. There were, he said, a number of contributing factors, including public and private efforts to raise public awareness about heart health.

Bolling:  The quality of care that is available today in emergency rooms and hospitals.

Bolling introduced his Steptember Exercise Program in 2007 and the Lt. Governor’s Challenge last year.

Bolling:  We tried to simply say to people if you eat a healthier diet, if you exercised more, you can shape up, you’ll feel better, you’ll look better, you’ll live longer, and these statistics really do prove that point.
