Virginia Police Sargeant Nominated for Award

A Virginia State Police Sergeant is among 22 law enforcement, firefighters, EMTs and other first responders who have been nominated in the America’s Most Wanted All Star Contest.

Sgt. Don Childs was flying a State Police helicopter, searching for a man accused of killing eight people in Appomattox County. The suspect shot at the chopper and hit it.  Sgt. Childs was able to land it safely in a field nearby.  He and his family have also lived through a devastating experience.  Sgt. Child’s 18 year old daughter Heidi and her boyfriend David Metzler were found shot to death at the Caldwell Fields Campground near the Virginia Tech campus.  That case is still unsolved.

Voters in the AMW All Star contest select eight finalists a week and each of them is profiled on the show. The Grand Prize winner receives $10,000 at the NASCAR SPRINT Cup All Star Challenge in May at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina.
