Report Released on Virginia Farmers

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has just released a report on Virginia farmers, who comprise Virginia’s biggest business.

Agriculture is Virginia’s biggest business at $55 billion sales every year, and 357,000 jobs across the commonwealth.  In conjunction with Virginia Agriculture Week later this month, the Department has released figures that show that one Virginia farmer today feeds about 129 people: 95 in this country and 34 abroad, which is the real growth area.

And even as the recession kicked in and other states were losing business, Virginia had a record year in agriculture exports in 2008 and last year may have been even better than that.  Governor McDonnell is scheduled at an International Trade Workshop in Norfolk tomorrow, where last year’s figures are expected to be announced.
