Maggie Walker Students Win Scholarships
Five Maggie Walker Governor’s School seniors have placed third in a national mathematics competition.
The team took third place in Moody’s Mega Math Challenge in New York City this week. They also won $10,000 in scholarship money. Their teacher and coach, John Barnes, said “they enjoyed this competition a lot because it gave them a chance to apply mathematics to an important real world topic.” They had 14 hours to complete research and then come up with a model proposal involving U.S. Census figures, including making recommendations for undercount adjustment and for apportioning the U.S. House of Representatives. 531 high school teams submitted papers, six were chosen to present their results in New York City for the top prizes.
The Maggie Walker Team included: Susan Ballentine, Will Farmer, Ashish Makadia, Cody Talmadge, and Eric Tyler, all members of the Math Modeling class at Maggie Walker.
