Grant Benefits Dinwiddie Civil War Site

The Commonwealth Transportation Board has awarded a million dollar grant to the Civil War Preservation Trust to buy battlefields and build access trails.

The money is going to be used in Dinwiddie County.

Koit:    It's going to help us purchase battlefield land in the region; through mapping and other investigations, we've identified about 11 million dollars' worth of battlefield land in Petersburg Dinwiddie area.

The Trust’s Mary Koit said now is a good time to protect this land.

Koit:   Especially right now, as we're coming up on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

The parcels are generally around a hundred acres or so. Three - near the Five Forks, Hatcher's Run and White Oak Road units - are more than a thousand acres. The Transportation Board is promoting Civil War sites and wineries as priorities in advance of the sesquicentennial that kicks off next year.

The land would quadruple the size of the Petersburg National Battlefield. The Board awarded Chesterfield County $175 thousand to pay for the Virginia State University section of the Appomattox Riverside Trail.
