Sabato Predicts GOP Will Pick Up Eight Governors
A record 37 governorships are up for grabs November 2 and both parties are pouring millions of dollars into statehouse races in the closing days of the campaign. As Charles Fishburne reports, UVA’s Larry Sabato is already being quoted widely across the country with his predictions about winners and losers.
Polls show Democrats risk losing around a dozen seats, including those in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, Maine and New Mexico.
But they also have a shot at pickups in four or five states, including California and possibly Florida. Larry Sabato at the University of Virginia Center for Politics says:
Sabato: On my Crystal Ball site, we've been projecting for almost six months that Republicans would gain a net of about eight governorships. There are 37 on the ballot, so to gain eight in one year is very significant.
And he says, that could have long-range repercussions.
Sabato: In 2011, when the redistricting is done, Republicans will have a big advantage for the next ten years.
Sabato was interviewed by the Associated Press.
