Better Business Bureau Warns About Sweepstakes Scam

The Better Business Bureau is warning everyone to on the alert for telephone calls about a "Mega Millions Sweepstakes."

I received a phone call two days ago from Mega Millions Sweepstakes saying I had won 1.5 million dollars and a car. I kept telling him I didn't believe him and we got disconnected. He called me back 6 times and I didn't pick up and finally left a voicemail with a number for me to call him back. I let it go until tonight when he called again and said my money would be delivered tomorrow. He rambled on until I finally put my husband on to talk to him. He was very hard to understand. Then he told my husband that I agreed to divorce him and marry this guy!!!! The number he called from is 876-296-9996.

I am getting several call a day saying I won prizes and need to send a fee for shipping and processing. I have had three today. The do not call list is useless.
I have contacted my state attoney general, but don't expect much from it.

I got s call saying that i had won 2.5 million and a 2013 pearl white benz...they said that i would have to send them 199$ today and i would receive my winnings within 45 minutes not to tell nobody because people would try to hold me for random. What should i do??

Same freaking thing happened to me. It sucked so bad because I actually almost let myself believe it. Man I really wanted that car. Well at least they didn't get any of my money

I was awaken this morning with a phone call from publishing clearing house megamillion sweepstakes saying that i won 250 thousand dollars and a new car. I was given a lot of information and the catch was to go and put 399 dollars on a green dot reloadable card. The conversation went on and on when i said, How do i know this is not a scam? He asked do you want the money? I finally said no and he hung up but called right back. I said this time that I will check this out and call him back. Got on this internet and called publisher clearing House and they said that they NEVER contact people by phone. Good enough for me. Jm Windfield called back and i told him this. He raised his voice at me and i told him dont raise your voice at me and he said then that it was our phone connection. Now he is sending me proof to my e-mail address. Thank God I found you all. There never was any danger of me sending money.

Just got a recorded call from 866-963-6205 to our home number, Saying that we had just won 10 million from the mega millions sweepstakes. Something about Green Dot Money pack. and a 5 digit confirmation number. Whenever they ask you to send them a fee or any amount of money it is not legit. Keep track of any contests you enter. Never give them any money. I won $1000 visa debit card from Metro PCS and Samsung. I had to fill out an affidavit and pay for a notary to verify who I was. But never gave the sweepstakes personnel any money.

I need to know about a specific sweepstakes called just born mega sweepstakes. Is it a scam? I really need to know!

I was raised to not be deceitful and with people I could trust. Now it is like a war going on against us who want to believe what people say, but is getting harder to trust anyone now. I got a call this morning by someone who said he was James from Mega Million Sweepstakes and that I had won $1,250,000 in a contest I entered 4 years ago. I do enter contests occasionally, so accepted it as possible. He asked for verification as to who I was and said they would deliver a 2012 brand new white Mercedes to my door today along with a cashier's check and said, for my own safety from scammers, I must not tell anyone about it. He said he would need some money from me to pay for the delivery of the vehicle, $500. I said I didn't have that much in my checking, so he wanted a credit card number, my account was frozen due to a recent scam. How much do you have in savings, very little, just enough to cover a few bills. He wanted that and said to to go draw it out and go to Walgreens and buy a $500 GreenDot Scratch Card that would be presented to the delivery person. That was my clue, but I am 2 months from being 76 and behind on my mortgage payments, trying to live on Social Security, vulnerable for a miracle, and he did mention something about God in his pitch. As I was driving to the bank, I prayed for a clue if this was real, I got the money out and went to Walgreens (30 mile drive one way). Before I got there, with him on the phone the whole distance giving me instruction, my phone went dead, but it wasn't the battery, and was locked up. That was my clue, but I didn't want to accept that as the sign, so I took the battery out and put it back in to restart it, and as soon as I did the phone rang and it was James wanting to know what happened. I bought the card and he immediately wanted the number under the scratch off to verify that it was good. The put his CEO on to give me farther instructions. Douglas said I would be getting the BMW (?) in a few hours and I should go straight home and verified the address for delivery, BUT said he would need $375 more to pay the the delivery person and to send it by Western Union to Joy in NY. I said I already bought the $500 card for that, but he said that was for something else. That was my second clue. When I got home, I went to my computer and found this site which has now cost me that Mercedes or BMW and $1,250,000. Ain't that a bummer. Now, how do I put that green dot card money back in my savings? Calls were from 8764017641, 8765685024

My wife and I received the same call this morning about the exact same thing you experienced. However, my wife was suspicious the entire time. She refused to send any money. We both said it was a scam. We did not temp to go get a card or send them any money. I hope everyone that read this realize that they are scamming people everyday. We have received several calls over a 2 month period, but we still refuse to send any money. They are using the same similiar number. They called us from 878-367-8781. This number is from Jamaica. Trust me my wife have done her homework. When I got the call, she immediately went to the computer and investigated the scam and search the Federal Trade Commission website along with Better Business Bureau. I am sorry this happen to you and I hope you was able to get your money off the card.

my 87 mother got a call from a 202 area code...claiming she was calling from las vegas, nevada - the mega millions sweepstakes company.
first of all, 202 area code is washington, dc.
since my mom really believed she was winning her 3.5 million along with a brand new spankin 2012 mercedes, she told the woman that her daughter (me) would call to confirm.
i called to hear the woman's spiel. they are very convincing (as they are scammers)....she insisted we had to go get the 'money packet' at walgreens or cvs to cover the shipping and handling of the prize.
without continuing on about this scam, i called up the DA office in queens.
i urge all people getting these calls to call the district attorney office and explain what you have just been through. they do listen and do investigations.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A MEGA MILLION SWEEPSTAKES COMPANY!!!
BE CAREFUL. HANG UP. WHEN SOMEBODY ASKS FOR MONEY, HANG UP !!!
annnd, if it's too good to be true, it usually is.

I got a call today from the "CEO and Company Manager" of "Mega Millions Sweepstakes Award" informing me that I have won $2.5 Million Dollars and a brand new 2012 Mercedes. The guy sounded like he was on the phone in a warehouse there was so much echo and I could barely understand a word he said. I told him I would call back later but really have no intentions to. The number was 206 888 1934

I got a call this morning saying I won 3.5millions and a peal white benz..the man name is micheal james...he told me ups will be bring me my winnings around 3.45pm that I needed to send my one percent to some one else...i asked for the numbers to call ups and he gave 8765089247 and 8763985170 its not real dont fall for it..why would I pay for my money..
Its my money and I need it now..lol

I think they sold my number to every scam artist is Jamaica (876) area code. I think Jamaica is No. 2 in scamming, Nigeria being in the forefront, but I could be corrected. Please don't waste your money and time on these folks. I know when you are desperate you do STUPID things...and I've thrown lots of money down this rathole - and I know better. I have tried to engage the U.S. Atty General's office, Postal Department (they do have a specific authority), but you actually have to be defrauded until they will do anything. Don't know why they just don't set up a sting operation. One of the problems, talking to the Bronx police when asked to send a cashier's check to a New York address express mail, is that there is so many fraudsters out there, they need to take care of the stabbings and physical violence threats. The typical yarn for the sweepstakes is a small amount at first, for taxes or delivery fees, then it escalates from there. Then you feel hooked (intentional) because you have put more into it and think you will get a delivery of a car and at least 2.5 million. REAL taxes on 2.5 mil would probably be close to 1.25M, and the IRS would get their piece before you would....i.e., the lottery winners who choose cash now. I know they just want 1% of your trust, SWEETIE, they are truthful words from my mouth. Many give you a code to ask for before speaking. A lot of the numbers if they are U.S. prefixes are MagicJack phone numbers....which you can choose whatever prefix you like and take it anywhere in the world and plug it into the internet...HUMMM. I requested a phone number from one person, they gave me, I would hope, just some random number for which a woman answered....had no clue what I was asking about. This was after I had said his company (International Game and Board or Gaming Board, supposedly in Carson City)....associated with Hillary Clinton as a sponsor...yeah, right, from grocery store coupons at a store.(I don't do coupons)..by the name of Mark Henry. Generic names...David King, Eddie Thomas, Leo Thompson....James Johnson, Michael Washington.

I tooo. received that same call , but this time it was from a Beverly or Barbara Williams, saying u are the lucky winner of 2.5 million and a brand new mercedes. I said yey right are u kidding and she kept saying this is true. How do you feel about winning, I told her skeptical. Anyway I went on to listen and then there ws the scam ...they have already taken care of 99% of the taxes and i would only have to pay 1% which was $1599...now if I won a sweepstakes why do I need to pay them money ...she kept going on and on about darling do you understand.. I said yey but this is very skeptical and I hung up.....Now c'mon this would be totally different if it was publishers clearing house

MEGAMILLION What???? SCAM SCAM SCAM

I got a phone call today saying that i was a "Mega Million Sweepstakes" winner. I listened to him for awhile then told him that i couldn't understand a word he was saying so i said take me off the list and i am not interested and i hung up on him. He called me back. I told him again that i wasn't interested. He said that government has chosen me. I said well send me something in the mail and then i will maybe think about it. I then hung up again he called me back and then told me that he was a priest that i need to have faith in God. I said i do have faith and how do i know you are a priest any body could call me and tell me that. He said i know but you need to have faith i am not lying to you. Then he read something out of the Bible to me. I then told him that if you are going to throw my faith in my face then do not call me back i am hanging up again. He called me back again. I finally told him that i want his phone number and name and his supervisors name and web site he gave them all too me. He wanted me to pay 785 dollars and send it in as a money order to U.S. Merchant Bank and then i will revive 2,500,000.00 and a 2010 Mercedes Benz. Then told them that i am going have to talk to my husband. I told them that i couldn't come up with the 785 dollars so he said what can you come up with i said 20 dollars he said that isn't good enough. I said well that is to bad. He then said go get a loan from a friend and or a bank. I said no i am not going to do that. So i finally told him that i am going to talk to my husband and do research on you and i will call in about 2 days. Then i looked them up on the internet and there web site wasn't to be found. www.megamillionsweepstake.com. This guy didn't speak very well English either. I told him once that if can't give me to someone that i can understand then i am not talking to him. He wouldn't have that and he called me back. Mega Million Sweepstakes is a scam. The phone number they call from is restricted but i did get a phone number from them 18765056420, the person that i talked to was Alder Copper and his supervisors name is Dan King. Oh and the 785.00 was for a Registration fee. They were going to cover 2000.00 dollars. They called my cell phone too.
