UVA Reports Continuing Success With Scapel-Free Surgery to Relieve Debilitating Tumor

Last March (2011), we reported that surgeons at the University of Virginia had conducted the world’s first scapel-free brain surgery to relieve a patient’s debilitating tremor.  One year later, in this WCVE Science Matters follow-up report, the news continues to be encouraging.

Center for Conservation Biology Launches Global Osprey Watch

It’s been just three weeks since The Center for Conservation Biology created Project Osprey Watch and already more than 400 people from across the U.S and in the United Kingdom have registered nearly 800 nests. The center, shared by William & Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University, wants to sign up even more. UVA Reports Success in Stem Cell Transplants Using Non-Controversial Procedure

Two patients with acute leukemia are responding well to the first stem cell transplants in Virginia. As Charles Fishburne reports, the procedures were performed at UVA using cells from the umbilical cord following a birth, a procedure that avoids the controversy surrounding embryonic stem cell research.

Virginia Center for Wind Energy Hosts Kidwind Challenge at SMV

The Virginia Center for Wind Energy at James Madison University hosted the first annual “Kidwind Challenge” over the weekend   As Charles Fishburne tells us in this WCVE Science Matters report, middle and high school teams from around the state brought their projects -- and their new knowledge about wind power --  to the Science Museum of Virginia.
