Get Up! With Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite!
We may be on late, but when you hear tracks from the new CD from Ben Harper wih Charlie Musselwhite on Time for the Blues this week (3/3/13), your'e going to want to GET UP! This collaboration is one of the best new blues releases of the year (so far) and has hit #1 on the Billboard Blues Charts! Read on...and don't miss this show!
The number two question we receive at Time For The Blues World Headquarters is “Where do you guys get your ideas?” Okay, the number one question is “When do you two plan on growing up?” As far as the ideas question goes, it’s relatively easy. We have a pretty decent blues library to look through and we occasionally get some new things from studios and artists. And once in a while we get ideas because I’m a horrible insomniac.
When you can’t sleep, you tend to do things in order to fall asleep. For me, that usually means turning into the late night talk shows. Few things can lull me into slumberland faster than a bunch of nattering celebrities going on and on about absolutely nothing.
But once in a while, you find something really cool and it leads to a new show.
See, a few weeks ago, I was staring at my television set watching Jay Leno talk to someone and after they cut to commercial, there on the stage was Ben Harper and Charlie Musslewhite! I couldn’t believe it – here were a couple of great musicians burning down the house and they’re relegated to the last four minutes of the show.
As you may know by now (if you've heard the show before), Henry and I are huge Charlie Musselwhite fans! It was a great honor to meet this legendary harp player and interview him when he came to town in 2010 in support of his CD "The Well"--and Charlie hasn't slowed down a bit since then! He's been touring almost constantly and played on Cyndi Lauper's CD "Memphis Blues" that we featured in 2011. Well, now, Ben Harper has Charlie with him on some of the most crunchy blues we've heard in this new release "Get Up!" and we'll feature tracks this week and in future shows!
What’s that? You want more? How about a couple of tracks from Colin Linden? He’s got a new CD "Still LIve" on Yellow Dog Records and you can read my review of it over at Professor Johnny P’s Juke Joint by clicking here. This live album is crisp, cool, and if you don’t know Linden’s work, you’re in for a real treat.
Then we’ve got another selection from EllerSoul Records artists 4Jacks. We played a track from them recently and wanted to feature a couple more for fun. Same with a little Gary Moore, there was just so much great music by him; we couldn’t feature it all on one show. Be sure to check out the Andy T-Nick Nixon Band and their new release on Delta Groove.
So make sure you take a nap Saturday afternoon, wash your jammies and get the popcorn ready for all sorts of great music and we’ll take the party into the wee hours of the morning. Time for the Blues with John Porter and Henry Cook airs Sundays at 1:00 a.m.
Have you heard something new lately that you'd like us to feature on the show? Give us a shout and we'll do right by you!
