For most, New Year’s Eve is a time of reflection while New Year’s Day gives us all a chance at a fresh start. During these days WCVE Public Radio will offer programs that look back and ahead in a way only public radio can do.

Saturday, December 31st
8:00 p.m.
- Ian Stewart offers The World Music Show at a special time.

9:00 p.m. - George Maida’s Electric Croude chimes in a little early to make way for 2012.

10:00 p.m. - A Prairie Home Companion’s Hawaiian New Year’s Eve, with Garrison Keillor - Garrison Keillor hosts a three hour broadcast from Hawaii with all of your favorites including Sue Scott, Tim Russell, Fred Newman, Erica Rhodes, Rich Dworsky and the Guy's All-Star Shoe Band.

“New Year’s Eve is supposed to be lighthearted, optimistic, even joyful, and for our listeners across America and overseas, Hawaii represents those things. Yes, I suppose it is a cliche, but it's a happy cliche, and it means that when we Statesiders get off a plane in Honululu in that marvelous open-air airport and smell the sea breeze and the flowers, we feel an instant buoyancy. New Year’s Eve tends to be a disappointing night, too much alcohol in crowded rooms with loud people. I can imagine someone sitting on a farm in Minnesota on December 31st and hearing soft-voiced Hawaiian singers and slack-key guitars and smelling the flowers and imagining beautiful people and deciding that 2012 may be a happy year after all.” -- Garrison Keillor

1:00 a.m. - Toast of the Nation - Count down, sing along and dance to live music all night long as we travel from coast to coast with celebrations in every time zone. It's the perfect holiday special for any New Year’s Event. Guests this year include the Junior Mance Quintet, Dianne Reeves and the Billy Childs Quartet to name a few.

Sunday, January 1st
11:00 a.m. - New Year’s Day from Vienna 2012
- The Vienna Philharmonic presents its ever popular annual New Year’s Day concert from the Golden Hall of the Musikverein in Vienna. You’ll hear your favorite waltzes, polkas and more as part of a festive start to your new year.

Monday, January 2nd
7:06 p.m. - The Capitol Steps New Year’s Edition of 'Politics Takes a Holiday!
- Ring in 2012 by making fun of 2011 with the Capitol Steps and their annual year-in-review awards ceremony. This year will feature all new awards such as “Best Not Just Any committee But a SUPER Committee,” “Biggest Clueless Middle Eastern Dictator Who Thought ‘Arab Spring’ Was Just a Trending Fashion” and “Most GOP Debates Ever Held.”
