Classical Music - Thu, 03/07/2013

A couple of leftovers from yesterday (The Swingle Singers perform Bach; another composer inspired by John Dowland) and then music inspired by the American West.

On February 28, or March 1 or on March 8th or 9th at around 11:15 a.m. I heard the Richmond Symphony performa a lovely concerto that featured a cellist (or bass) soloist. Can you help us? Thanks, Jesse

Jesse--

On March 1, we played the Edgar Meyer Concerto for Bass, performed by the Richmond Symphony with Edgar Meyer as soloist. -Mike Goldberg

The Schumann "Nachtstucke" performed by Sviatoslav Richter is a piano work and aired between 11:40 and 11:59 with Schumann's typical shifts in mood. It was a live recital from Richter. Between 12:08 and 12:30 was Gorecki's "Kleines Requiem fur eine Polka" (or "Little Requiem for a Polka"). It is an orchestral work with a lot of bell-like sounds (and occasional suggestions of a polka). Gorecki is a contemporary, minimalist composer, so the piece moved more slowly than the Schumann and tended to have repeated patterns. Of the two pieces, the Gorecki is the least familiar, so that may have been the one that caught your ear.

Heard a great new (to me) work today. Missed the introduction (walking the dog) and the conclusion (Fedex delivery). It was on the air at 12:20 and I assume from todays playlist that it was probably Richter's Nachtstuke - if so can you give me details on the CD?

Hi Ralph -

actually from 12:08 until around 12:35 it looks like Gorecki: Kleines Requiem, Harpsichord Concerto, Good Night was playing.

You can find more info on any CD by clicking on the album cover - that will take you to the amazon page, which will give you more info about the CD. Here's a link to the Gorecki

Hope this helps.
