Birthday Blog O' Fun!

Kinobe

Listen: from my understanding, birthdays are celebrations of the passage of time; and are a time to look behind at things past and at the future of things yet to come. So it is with this pending birthday that I want to bestow onto you, my faithful listeners, some musical gifts of things past (in this case, some of my favorite nuggets from the past year or so). As the saying goes, it’s better to give than receive, right? Here are some of the highlights from this week’s show:

First up are a few selections from a few different countries around the African continent. From Uganda, you’ll hear some melodic, acoustic and joyful sounds from Kinobe and Soul Beat Africa, who play some amazing Ugandan music. And you’ll hear from Nigeria’s king of Juju music King Sunny Ade, he plays a mix of poly-rhythmic Afro-beat music that will get your toes tapping (is it odd that I selected a song of his called “Congratulations (Happy Birthday).”

And you’ll hear some great Brazilian music from Mosquitos and Think of One. Plus, I’m going to throw in some Italian music from Vinicio Cappossea and Gianmaria Testa. Cafe Tacuba, Los Lobos, The Jolly Boys, Gotan Project, Afrocubism, as well some of my favorite music from some classic bands who would now be considered “New Wave,” or “Alternative,” with the likes of The English Beat, The Police, The Cranberries as well as from The Talking Heads and Joe Strummer.

All in all, for a birthday show, I think the real gift for me is playing the music that I love for you, so enjoy. The World Music Show aires Saturday nights at 10:00 p.m. Follow me on Twitter @wcveworldmusic.
