The Celebration of Random World Holidays

bebel gilberto

When I was looking at the calendar for June for some ideas for the World Music Show, I noticed that besides Father's Day (in which they'll be a great World Music Show), there were some very interesting holidays happening around the globe. So this week's World Music Show (6/4) is going to a celebration of Random Holidays. For instance, in Australia, there is Foundation Day; in New Zealand, the Queens Birthday; in Ireland, there is a bank holiday and there is also World Environment Day on June 5th. I'll explain the importance of each holiday during the show.

I'll be playing some great music from people like Johnny Clegg and Savuka, and Bebel Gilberto, and Cafe Tacuba, just to wet your appetite.

But really, tonight's show is a great excuse to play interesting music from all over the world. And who doesn't like to celebrate random holidays anyway?

The World Music Show aires Saturday nights at 10:00 p.m. and during the broadcast, you can follow a live conversation with me on Twitter in which I'll comment on the selections and offer background tidbits, too. Look me up @wcveworldmusic.
