“ROBO Warriors” Get Ready for Regional Robotics Contest

Members of the “ROBO Warriors” FIRST robotics team at Henrico High School are gearing up for a regional qualifying contest December 15th that will challenge their teamwork and technical skills. The team participates in FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), a program designed to give students hands-on experience designing and building robots, solving problems and competing in high-energy contests. “I love mechanical engineering, so I wanted a program that would help me explore that and develop the skills that I would need in college,” said Aaron Kane, a senior at Henrico High and a veteran of the ROBO Warriors. “I’ve been building things ever since I could walk.”

Girls and Robotics – Do the Unexpected!

Members of St. Catherine's Middle School Robotics Team

I hope no one minds, but I would like to take liberty here with the words of Dean Kamen, the Founder of FIRST® Robotics. Kamen developed the vision for FIRST® which is for all young people – but I want to focus on young women today. My revision goes like this “Robotics can transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young women dream of becoming science and technology leaders.”

Virginia High School Students Explore Health Care Careers at VCU

Governor’s School for Life Sciences and Medicine

Twenty-six of Virginia’s brightest and most promising high school students interested in pursuing health care careers recently completed an intensive Governor’s School program hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University.

Students and Teachers Explore Outer Space

Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching Achievement

This summer, Virginia students and teachers in grades 4-6 explored the possibilities of life on Mars as part of the Virginia Initiative for Science Teaching and Achievement (VISTA) Summer Camp and Teacher Training Institute. VISTA is a partnership among 69 school districts, six universities and the Virginia Department of Education. The goals of VISTA are to improve science teaching and student learning in Virginia.

Virginia Eagle Scout Argonaut to Explore the Baltic Sea

Alex Overman Eagle Scout

Dr. Robert Ballard, Life Scout and world renowned oceanographer who discovered the Titanic, has invited a Virginia Eagle Scout and future leader in marine archaeology to explore the mysteries of the Black Sea. Alex Overman from Hamilton, Va., has been selected as the Eagle Scout Argonaut to accompany Dr. Ballard’s team aboard Exploration Vessel Nautilus from July 24 – 26.

Take a Ride on the Engineering Side

human-powered moonbuggy

Mountain bikes are great, but would one work on the face of the MoonNASA engineers and VCU’s School of Engineering students know better. The Moon’s rock-and-roll face is not a mountain trail. Special engineering skills are needed to design and build a vehicle humans can ride across the moon’s alien environment.

Robots Spark Dreams and Future Careers, Part II

Team Sparky 384

Congratulations to Team Sparky 384 from Henrico County, who joined teams from Martinsville, Va. and Raleigh, N.C. to become top winners in the 2012 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Virginia Regional, a “varsity sport for the mind.”

With the purpose of inspiring future engineers and scientists, this year’s contest brought together 59 teams from Virginia, The Carolinas, Connecticut and Washington, DC to face off at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Stuart C. Siegel Center to compete in a two-day robotic basketball tournament. The top performers qualified to compete at the FIRST World Championship in St. Louis on April 25-28.

Learning through Nuclear Science

Teachers explore Nuclear Science

Nuclear science is part of our everyday lives – from the energy that powers our world to applications in medicine and food safety.

This summer, Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Engineering is again collaborating with the Virginia Section of the American Nuclear Society, and other professional societies, to conduct a four day Science Teacher Workshop on the “Science of Nuclear Energy and Radiation.” Now is the time for teachers in grades 6 through 12 across the US to apply for the 2012 summer program.

Senior Design Expo 2012: VCU Event Aims to Raise Awareness to Middle and High School Students

Senior Design Expo

Virginia Commonwealth University School of Engineering presents Senior Design Expo 2012, an annual event where teams of engineering students share their innovative research and design prototypes with the greater Richmond community.

The event will take place on Friday, April 27, at 9:30 a.m., in the rotunda and adjacent rooms of the Science Museum of Virginia located at 2500 West Broad Street.

Future Engineers Build Under Pressure

When you were a kid, how many things did you build out of Popsicle sticks?  Maybe a pencil holder or a box, a teepee, or a sling shot?  What about a bridge that can withstand the added weight of hundreds of pounds?  Students from Cosby High School’s Engineering Design Course recently developed designs and built bridges that could hold up under pressure.
