The Herb
Garden was donated by the Richmond Council of Garden Clubs in 1957, and has
been maintained by the Old Dominion Herb Society since 1978.
It is located
beside the original Stone Barn and is most convenient to Maymont's Hampton
Street entrance.
This garden
displays herbs for culinary, medicinal and potpourri uses. Herbs are organically
grown so visitors may touch, smell and taste.
The Herb
Garden is the centerpiece of Maymonts annual Herbs Galore
festival and sale, which will be held on Saturday, April 29, from 9 a.m.
until 5 p.m.

Native plants
are those that evolved in the wild settings where they now occur naturally.
They may also have arrived in their current settings by natural dispersal
and without human help.
Generally,
native plants are defined as those present in North America before the
arrival of the first Europeans.
Alien and
exotic species are those introduced by humans whether delibrately or inadvertently.
Losses in
population size and genetic diversity can occur if native species are
collected in the wild. Rather purchase native plants from reputable growers
or native plant society sales.
Native plants
are naturally adapted to harsh growing conditions such as drought.
Proper siting
and soil preparation is key in growing natives successfully. |
