Top Plant Picks for the Landscape
Landscape plants can add value to any property if the are carefully planned, selected and maintained.
Choose plants based on their ultimate use, (i.e. screening, specimen plants, providing shade, color, or texture to the landscape).
The site conditions must be taken into account before selecting plants. Drainage, amount of sunlight, wind exposure, and soil type are critical factors which may help determine which plants are best suited for a specific location.
Think about maintenance as you select your plant material. A highly public area may not be well suited for a plant that requires a lot of maintenance, particularly if that involves pest control. Also, plants that attract insects may not be a good choice for an outdoor eating area.
Consider incorporating woody plants, perennials and annuals into your landscapes for diversity.

Historic Kenmore is the home of Fielding and Betty Washington Lewis, George Washington’s only sister.
Kenmore is a Georgian-style mansion built in the 1770s.
In 1929, The Garden Club of Virginia raised funds to restore the gardens at Kenmore, making Kenmore the first beneficiary of and inspiration for Historic Garden Week of Virginia.
Landscape Architects Charles Gillette, Alden Hopkins and Rudy Favretti were all involved in creating gardens at Kenmore. These are purely conjectural due to a lack of precise archaeological record.
Ferry Farm is the boyhood home of George Washington.
The garden at Ferry Farm includes plants that were typically grown during Washington’s time. |
