Summer Phlox
with Peggy Singlemann
Director of Horticulture, Maymont Foundation
Summer phlox prefers moist well drained soil and grows to a height of 2 to 5 feet, depending on the cultivar. These plants bloom from June to September and are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Two improved cultivars features are paniculata David and paniculata Robert Poore. David has fragrant white flowers and grows 3 to 4 feet in height. Robert Poore has purple flowers and reaches heights of 4 to 5 feet. Both of these cultivars are highly resistant to powdery mildew.
