Plant of the Month: May 2008

Chinese Fringe Tree (Chionanthus retusus)
This deciduous large shrub or small tree is known for its showy and fragrant white flowers in early spring. Similar to our native Fringe tree, Chionanthus virginicus, it can be used as an alternative to dogwood. Even after the blooming period is over, it makes an effective back drop for perennials. As a result of its open branch structure, it provides an interesting habit for birds.
