Next on Virginia Home Grown: Late Winter/Early Spring Color and Cheese

For the Season 11 premier, we visit Maymont to talk about late winter/early spring color. Then we are off to Crozet to see how Monastery Country Cheese is made. Tune in March 29th at 8:00 PM.
Original Airdate: Tuesday, 3-22-2011

What is the name of the plant mentioned early in the Maymont section-it is planted in August, but is green all winter. It was in front of a stone wall. In summer it sends up shoots with berries.

Thank you,

Janet Fast

Hello Janet,
The plant you asked about is Italian Arum (Arum italicum). A common use of Arum italicum is underplanting hosta. When the hosta dies back in fall, the foliage of the Arum replaces it. And in summer, the Arum foliage disappears and is replaced by stalks of orange seeds that appear to be coming from the hosta, adding an extra color dimension to the otherwise green ground-cover.
