WILDER: An American First – Time Line
1931 – On January 17, Lawrence Douglas is born to Robert and Beulah Wilder in “Churchill”, a neighborhood in Richmond Virginia.

1947 – Wilder completes high school, attends Virginia Union University.

1951 – Wilder graduates from Virginia Union University in chemistry.

1952 – Wilder is drafted into the U.S. Army and serves in Korea.

1956 – Wilder enters law school at Howard University in Washington D.C.

1958 – Wilder marries Eunice Montgomery.

1959 – Wilder is the only African American to pass the State Bar Exam that year, and starts his own law practice back in Churchill.

1969 – Wilder is the first African American to be elected in the Virginia Senate since Reconstruction.

1976 – Wilder and Eunice end their marriage with divorce.

1981 – Wilder is ranked as fifth most influential senator in Virginia.

1985 – Wilder becomes the Democratic candidate for Virginia Lt. Governor. In August, Wilder begins statewide “station wagon” campaign tour in the far reaches of state. In November, Wilder is elected Lt Governor of Virginia.

1986 – In January, Wilder is sworn in as Lt. Governor of Virginia

1989 – On June 10th, Wilder is nominated as the Democratic nominee for Governor. On November 7th, Wilder is elected as Governor of Virginia.

1990 – In January, thousands swarm the state capitol as Wilder is sworn in as Governor of Virginia.

1991 – Wilder runs for Democratic Presidential nomination.

1992 – Wilder drops out of race for the Democratic Presidential nomination.

1993 – Wilder Runs for U.S. Senate as independent drops out and supports Charles Robb.

2004 – Wilder as the Chairman, leads the United States National Slavery Museum groundbreaking ceremony in Fredericksburg Virginia.

2005 – In November, Wilder becomes the first popularly elected Mayor of Richmond in over fifty years.
